As the saying goes’ desperate times need desperate measures’. This new TikTok #SaveOurOcean challenge can be considered as a desperate measure to save our oceans. This is the first of its kind challenge. By introducing this challenge TikTok has taken the responsibility of caring for mother earth. This challenge aimed at addressing the plastic pollution problem. The challenge also aims at protecting oceans and marine ecosystems. It is intended for the people living in the coastal regions whose lives are dependent on the oceans.
TikTok users around the world especially the users from United States, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Malaysia, India, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Turkey, MENA (the Middle East and North Africa), South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Chile participated in the so-called #SaveOurOceans challenge. The campaign started on August 26 and ended on September 09. It urged the TikTok users to upload their version of the challenge with the #SaveOurOceans. Users can participate in this challenge and add an ocean effect to their videos. The ocean effect lets them virtually remove plastic wastes out of the ocean. A TikTok user named @wigofellas uploaded his version of the challenge with #saveouroceans. He is popular on TikTok for his comedic skirts videos. In the video, wigofellas have used the ocean effect. To show the drastic change our oceans went through from 1900 coming to 2019. So far this video has been liked 813.9k times and shared more than 32.3k times.
Another TikTok user by the name @hanamartinx uploaded five different videos with #saveouroceans. She made her name on TikTok for her transformation videos on TikTok. Her transformation videos usually incorporate sound clips along with her makeup talents.
TikTok user @sespo is popular for posting lip-sync videos on the platform. He too joined the #saveouroceans challenge. In his video, he walks on the beach collecting plastic bottles floating in the ocean. His version of saving our oceans challenge video has been liked more than 205k times in the platform.
A TikTok user who goes by the name @coxy.official also took part in the #SaveOurOceans challenge. His tagline for the video read “Up to 12 million tonnes of plastic ends up in the ocean every year”. His video has been shared 3239 times and got more than 283.7k likes.

There are more than 500 million monthly active users on TikTok worldwide. There have been many incidences where a video or a challenge went viral for no reason at all.
